Next message: Dan Schwartz: "RE: [WinMac] NT vs 98 on Appleshare IP Network"
We need some help in deciding whether to change one of our PCs to Windows NT.
A hardware manufacturer we work with has asked us to beta test a new
Windows NT version of their software package. We would very much
like to do so, however our production machine currently runs Windows
98.
We have no objection to buying and installing NT, but we are
concerned with possible problems which would require teams of
Microsoft Certified IT Professionals to solve. We are mostly Mac
people.
We run a small Appleshare IP 6.3 network, with 7 Macs and 4 PCs. The
PCs all run Windows 98. We share 2 printers over the network: a
LaserWriter 12/640 and an Epson 1270 with Axis 1440 Ethernet
connection. (Note that the only way I have been able to get the PCs
to consistently work with the LaserWriter is to make a direct
parallel connection to one of the PCs, and then share it out from
that PC.) The Macs all behave beautifully.
The only software that we run on that production machine (besides the
manufacturer's) is Photoshop, Illustrator, and CorelDraw,
occasionally one of the Microsoft Office products, along with Norton
Antivirus.
Any thoughts from the NT experts. Any bad experiences from the non
NT experts. Can I just install NT over the Windows 98 system? Will
everything break? Are there specific ways to avoid problems?
Thanks for your help.
