    I guess if I'd thought this through a little more thoroughly (hope you don't
    read with a lisp!), I could've answered the question myself.

    My understanding is that without the PAP in AppleTalk, there's no feedback
    from the printer to the workstation, resulting in (among other things) the
    lack of ability to resolve PS errors. I was hoping that MS, along with the
    implementation of AFP-over-IP, had come up with some slick workaround,
    allowing two-way communication (for PS negotiation) over IP. Perhaps there
    is a limitation in the LaserWriter driver? But then one uses the same
    driver to print LPR, right?

    I agree about some of the (often overlooked) strengths of AppleTalk, but it
    would be really nice to get that kind of functionality with the efficiency
    of IP...
