Next message: Tom Roth: "[WinMac] Re: PC Permissions vs. Mac Permissions"
It's been 3 years since we switched from a Novell server to an Microsoft
NT server and there are still things I don't understand about NT
permissions. I even took a big thick NT Server book home last night to
read and I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I manage a departmental server (NT4.0 sp5 & Services for Macintosh)
that's part of an entire domain within the medical center. In our
department we have 19 Macintosh clients, 23 WinNT Workstation clients,
and 3 Win95/98 clients that all connect to this NT Server that I manage.
The server has many logical drives, all of which have been set to share
for both Mac and PC clients.
On the Sharing tab there is a Permissions button and then on the
Security tab there's yet another Permissions button. The settings
available on each are not exactly the same yet fairly similar. How do
these two Permissions work?
Right now what I'm trying to do is to give access to folders within the
logical drives to certain people but not to give them access to
everything on the drive. I've not been able to figure out how to do
that. On the Novell server I use to see folders but not be able to get
into them if I didn't have access. Now it seems like it's either all or
nothing for the entire drive.
For example, the logical drive Art has been shared to the group also
called Art so that everyone who is a member of the Art group has full
access to the entire Art drive. Now I've created a folder on Art called
Print Shop Prepress and (Yup, you guessed it!) I'd like to give a group
called Print Shop Prepress access to just that folder only. It's OK of
they can see the other folders on Art as long as they don't have access
to get into them. It's also fine too if when they open the Art drive
all they see is their Print Shop Prepress folder. Is this not possible
under NT? Please help and TIA!
