Next message: Aryeh Weinstein: "[WinMac] A cheap Mac/Win server: SnapServer"
I've just had a Quantum SnapServer for a week or two, and thought I'd
pass on my observations.
Advantages:
cheap (about US$500 for the 10GB model)
Mac/Win/NFS access
Uses any NT User info it finds (not for Mac users, tho)
Good security adviser
Easy to set up (web browser used for configuration)
Includes a webserver (haven't looked into that yet)
Small (about 30x10x10 cm)
Boots quickly
3 year guarantee
Disadvantages:
Win users moving/copying/deleting Mac files on server have to
move/copy/delete "resource fork" file as well (kept in a folder in
the same level, invisible to Mac users)
Mac users can't use WinNT user info
IMHO, If Quantum sort out the above problems they've got a
cross-platform killer product.
A quick test with my 300MHZ WinNT server shows no real speed
difference, but the comparison isn't really all that accurate.
Any other thoughts?
