            I would "bite the bullet," install a SCSI card and go the SCSI CD-R route.
    There's been all sorts of FireWire & USB problems working well with CD-R...
    It's not a mature technology. OTOH, SCSI is quite robust.

            Just my 2 cents after 5 years of burning CD's...
