Dan,
You must mean on the Retrospect server side as on the client side I've
taken the Retrospect Control Panel out of a Mac running OS 7.5.1 and
dropped it into a 7.6.1, 8.0, 8.1, 8.5.1, 8.6 and now even an OS 9 Mac
without the least bit of a problem. The Mac that Retrospect is running
on is still at 7.6.1.
We tried using ARCserve to backup everything, network server, PC
workstations and Mac workstation. It worked fine for PCs but it'd
frequently miss the Macs for no real reason. After screwing around for
about two years with many upgrades I finally just bought Retrospect for
Macintosh and set it up on a dedicated Mac to run it on and it's worked
great. Retrospect is simple to setup and use. It has frequently saved
the day. We have an Exabyte 8mm tape connected to it now.
ARCserve is good for the server though a lot more work to setup and use.
It's expensive to buy the first time but when I arrived here over 6
years ago they already had version 4 on a Netware 3.11 server. Now with
upgrades we're up to version 6 on an NT Server. It backs up both server
and workstation extremely fast. Of course it helps to have a good DLT
drive too but the ARCserve client agent on the NT Workstations is part
of the reason for the speed.
All this to say that there aren't other equally good backup apps out
there. These are just the two I have experience with.
