For slapping in additional file storage, appliances like the Snap,
Network Appliances, etc, are, imo, the way to go.
Fast, cheap and easy: for once you get all three. (not surprising, since
most of these are Linux boxen under the skin)
Point. You'll want one that supports ASIP, which will be faster than
Appletalk.
The usual uptime caveats apply: You want sturdy components (so make sure
they have good powersupplies and mobos) and reliable software.
We have people here on campus running Network Appliance boxes that are
quite happy, and we're probably going to something like this the next
time we need to add drive space, since our servers are full of drives.
I think the US MacWorld just reviewed two of them, the Snap server and
Linksys Instant GigaDrive. They really liked the Snap server, gave it 4
1/2 meeses.
