No. The laserwriter driver only knows how to talk to an
Appletalk+Postscript device. But other drivers can talk to anything
they want. Epson uses a special command set. Apple's Stylewriters used
various things. It's the driver that determines it. And with the
Orange Micro unit the OM driver accepts the QuickDraw commands and
generate the printer codes for the printers it supports.

Most serial printers use either X-On/X-Off handshaking or hardware
signaling to keep the computer from overrunning the printer buffers.
When they are overrun you get garbage out. Just as the fellow mentioned.
