Before you go waste an enormous amount of time and energy, be aware that
the CDR world (like _most_ discussions you see online) is FILLED with
unsubstantiated, anectdotal, often _complete_ BS.

Very little has actually been put to the test objectively.

Remember how putting a green stripe around the edge of your audio CD
would make it sound better?

Don't _even_ get me involved in a Monster Cable discussion (bluntly...it
ain't worth it...most systems sounded better because the users were
upgrading from really crappy, beat-up, stepped on high guage lamp cord,
and they were _expecting it to sound better. Ergo, it does. Amazing
thing, the placebo effect, especially after your hearing's been
sharpened by a substantial lightening of your wallet ;-)

CD's are made of polycarbonate plastic, which is quite rugged and highly
resistant to alcohol. The dyes in a sharpie marker are quite inert, as,
chemically, that's the _entire_ point behind a dye.

More than likely, the CD's in question were stored someplace that
solvent fumes or heat could get to them.

The CDR FAQ is divided on the Sharpie issue citing anecdotal evidence to
support both the 'They're OK' and 'Never Use Them' sides, but notes that
more than one manufacturer recommends using non water based permanent
markers.
