[WinMac] CD-ROM Archiving?

Hello all. I don't know if this is the right place to ask, and if it is
not, does anyone know where I might?

Question:

I have a need to archive information onto CD ROMS. I have "heard" that some
recordable media is less desirable than others, and the "Sharpie" pens
should be kept off of the face of the recorded CDs, as the vehicle for the
ink can damage the info on the CD.

Does anyone have a method they use, that seems to work very well for them?
I have already "lost" two archived CDs (out of 200 or so). I would hate for
others to "go south" as well.

Suggestions?

Different place I can ask this question?

Thanks for any help offered.

-Peter
