[WinMac] Drive Overlays?

I'm in the process of upgrading the hard drive in my Dell PC laptop
(Inspiron 3000). I bought a Toshiba 10G drive which the laptop
refuses to see more than 8.4G. I'm confused as to whether this is a
BIOS limitation or something has to be set in the drive itself. (I
flashed the BIOS to the latest version with no change)

In my research into the problem on the net, I found several
references to "drive overlays". I'm not sure what they do or if they
are a good idea. I'm using BootMagic to dual boot into NT and '98 and
I'm happy with this arrangement.

As a note, I popped the hard drive into my PowerBook and it saw the
entire drive. ¿Como?
