It's about AppleShare servers but it contains a useful bit of information.
"When a volume is indexed from within the Sherlock application an invisible
index file is written to the root level of that volume." So, if you don't
have write permission there, you can't index it. The article suggests that
the invisible file is used by all sherlock clients so maybe one person with
write permission on the volumes can create the indexes and everyone else
can use them.
