[WinMac] Trouble using MapSource with VPC on a Wallstreet

I would like to downloaded data from a Garmin MapSource
CDROM to a Garmin GPS III+. The Garmin software only
runs on Wintel machines, so I have now installed VirtualPC
3.0 on my Wallstreet (it's amazing!) and tried to do the
download as directed. Everything worked fine until I tried
to do the actual transfer of the map data to my Garmin III+,
at which point I got an error message saying that the Garmin
was not responding. I know I have the Garmin attached
correctly (to the printer/modem serial port) since I could
do a test upload of waypoint data from it to the WS using
GPSy ( a Mac program). The "direct cable" is set to use
COM1 in VPC, and I also have COM1 set in the MapSource
software preferences. Being very new to Wintel I don't know
what to try next. Any help on this would be very much
appreciated!---Thanks, Dick Palais
