        Dear Geoff,

You can either hook up the CLJ 5M to the parallel port of a PC if you have
just one; to the parallel port of an NT box if you want to share the
printer to a network of 95/98/NT PC's (with NT/Workstation) and Macs (with
NT/Server with Services For Macintosh installed).

You can also use HP's JetDirect software to capture the ethernet port on
the printer.

Lastly, if you have an NT/Server with SFM you can also use Adobe's AdobePS
print driver, set up the printer and share it, and do NOT capture the
printer when offered. This will allow the most flexibility in that the Macs
can print either directly or through the spooler to the CLJ 5M, allow 9x/NT
clients to spool to the CLJ 5M; plus it provides the bonus of using
AppleTalk's PAP (Printer Access Protocol) for robust, Mac-like printing.

It's that last part you want to pay attention to: The link between the NT
spooler and the printer itself. If you use NT/Server with SFM enabled
(which also enables the AppleTalk stack) - Even if you don't have any Macs
- you can use AppleTalk's powerful PAP feature for the link between the
spooler and the printer. Otherwise you'll need to use a parallel port cable
(with distance limitations); or lose powerful features by using the
JetDirect software, or worse yet, LPR.

Yeah, I trash the Macs quite a bit... But there actually *are* a few
things that I like, such as the PostScript printing via AppleTalk. Let's
hope that one nice feature doesn't get Steveified.

        Cheers!
        Dan
