The beginning of the thread is fading from my memory but here
goes...

There's also the preferences within the individual programs too.
For example, my version of Netscape has a preferences area
where "helper" programs are designated. In my version is
from the Preferences -> Navigator -> Applications.

Take a look at that too.

Also, since you do not have JpegView (a nice program worth looking at)
I suspect that QuickTime takes over since JpegView isn't there.
