Some sources report Mac OS 9 is shipping. PowerPC and min 32mb RAM
required.

Here's a short list of features from today's www.macintouch.com

Major features of Mac OS 9 include:

1.Multiple Users feature controls access to files and preferences via a
logon process with passwords. Voice authentication is available and
developers can create other authentication methods (e.g. fingerprint
scanning).

2.Apple Data Security 2.0 includes encryption, code-signing, a "keychain"
and digital signatures.

3.Finder 9 adds a File Encrypt menu item, plus support for files larger
than 2 Gbytes.

4.Open Transport 2.5 improves performance and reliability substantially,
addresses DHCP problems and apparently adds an ARA server.

5.PlainTalk 2 improves speech synthesis and recognition.

6.The first version of "Carbon" programming interfaces for new software
is included.

7.Mac OS 9 introduces new typography software (ATSUI 2.0).

8.Mac OS 9 includes USB audio support and a new Sound Manager (only one
sound input can be active at a time).

9.Personal file-sharing and program linking now work over TCP/IP
(requiring AppleTalk also to be turned on).

10.AppleScript works over TCP/IP via URLs in "tell" commands.

11.Software Update "provides a way to find and install the latest system
software for your computer by way of the Internet. ... There are no
public APIs for this facility."

12.Sherlock 2 provides introduces search sets and language selection.

13.A new Drive Setup adds Unix volume support.

14.Palm Desktop 2.5 offers standalone "PIM" functions and Palm computer
support.
