Hi guys and gals,

The WinMac list has come through for me and I hope that it can on this case as
well. Here is the problem:

I have an Aptiva (2168) that I first installed RedHat Linux on and then
installed Windows 98 SE (UK) when the rest of the family started complaining
about RedHat. The Aptiva has an MWave sound/modem card (28.8 MHz.). My problem
started when I installed Win 98 SE. Windows can't find the modem on any of the
COM ports. I tried installing drivers manually, but that did not help either.
The modem does not respond on any of the COM ports. Some sound comes through,
but I don't know if the MWave sound is functioning properly. I have tried to
find the drivers for the MWave card, but am unsure whether I should use Danish
MWave drivers (the BIOS is Danish and upgraded to solve Y2K problems) or UK
which is what the system is that I am now running. I tried contacting IBM's Y2K
service, but they only replied that they do not comment on third party software.
This is because the MWave drivers are apparently NOT Win 98 compliant, but then
again, Win 95 isn't fully Y2K compliant. In other words, a Catch 22 situation.
To make matters worse, I discovered that my kids have lost the IBM original
install CD-Rom!

Here are some questions in reference to my situation:

1) Does RedHat Linux do anything except erase the hard disk when it is installed
(i.e. overwrite something on the MWave card?

2) Does it pay to try to download the MWave drivers from the IBM site (and if
so, should they be the Danish or UK drivers)? If not, I will need to get a
replacement sound card AND modem.

3) This Aptiva model only has two PCI slots, one which is used by a USB card
that I have added. Can I get a sound card that uses the slot that the MWave card
is sitting in?

4) Will a non MWave sound card slow the processor down too much (Pentium 75)?

5) If a non MWave sound card will slow the the processor down too much, is it
worth it to upgrade the processor?

6) Any suggestions for a USB modem?

7) Any other suggestions?

Cheers,

Brian Durant
