        Hi, Dan!

        I'll reply inline...

use a Netopia router on ISDN which is fantastic. As far as I know, these
things are almost impossible to hack through due to their ability to
randomly select an IP address every time they access a remote server.

Do keep in mind that ISDN is a lot more common in Europe - Especially
Germany - than in the US. Check out xDSL (one of the DSL flavors) instead,
especially in UK, since you can implement Voice over IP to trim your phone
bills.

had to telnet to the router to find out what IP address it was using then
verbally tell him this number over the phone so he could connect to it and
perform a firmware upgrade.

What is happening is that the router is a DHCP client when it dials out,
and (probably) a DHCP server for the LAN. I use a virtually identical unit
here at home, a WebRamp IP. <http://www.rampnet.com>.

(following reports on this list and others) that there is a conflict
between MacOS 8.6 and the latest version of Retrospect. Anyone got any
thoughts on that? Tape is the only really useful media as others have said.
We use CDR only for archiving.

Oh, please fill us in about this issue! This is actually the second time
they've shipped a buggy Retrospect version with AppleShare Server...

1&Count=110&Expand=2#2, which you may find useful. Try not to be too put
off by most of the submissions though; our system works flawlessly - the
only problem I have at the moment is that our 6 gb 8mm DAT tapes are no
longer big enough. What's next, O list gurus? (my boss doesn't want to
shell out too much - is there a solution at around the £2000 mark?)

There's only really one way, and that's DLT. Period. Other technologies -
Even AIT - use helical scan heads like you find in your VCR. That is why
DAT tapes have a useful, reliable life of only 50 backups. DLT is good for
500,000 passes, because it uses a linear 128 track tape. This is what the
mini & mainframe ("Big Iron") boys have been using for almost 20 years now,
and they work *extremely* well.

Keep this in mind when selecting backup software and especially a tape drive:

The only thing worse than no backup at all is a bad backup!
