Hi Tom,

We too have a small network comprising about six macs and six win95 machines. We use ASIP 6.2 to share for both systems, and for internet we use a Netopia router on ISDN which is fantastic. As far as I know, these things are almost impossible to hack through due to their ability to randomly select an IP address every time they access a remote server. When I got some phone tech support from my distributor for my router, I had to telnet to the router to find out what IP address it was using then verbally tell him this number over the phone so he could connect to it and perform a firmware upgrade.

As far as back up goes, retrospect is the business, but you may find (following reports on this list and others) that there is a conflict between MacOS 8.6 and the latest version of Retrospect. Anyone got any thoughts on that? Tape is the only really useful media as others have said. We use CDR only for archiving.

Apple run a forum for ASIP at http://discuss.info.apple.com/boards/servers.nsf/by+Category?OpenView&Start=1&Count=110&Expand=2#2, which you may find useful. Try not to be too put off by most of the submissions though; our system works flawlessly - the only problem I have at the moment is that our 6 gb 8mm DAT tapes are no longer big enough. What's next, O list gurus? (my boss doesn't want to shell out too much - is there a solution at around the £2000 mark?)

Hope this helps,

Dan Thurgood
