Jay,

I a similar experience with SoftWindows... only I had, like I thought
I was supposed to do, sent in my registration card when I installed
on my Mac.... and when I called Insignia some months later with a
TCP problem, I was told that my warranty had expired about a month
before my call...

...in other words, apparently, by sending in the registration card I
started a clock that eventually prevented me from getting help...
they told me, like they told you, I could buy another unit and then
pleased to help me...

...instead of purchasing another "unit", I purchased Virtual PC, and
it works great!

I hope that someone can help me.
My accountant has advised me to use QuickBooks Pro.
I must use Virtual PC to use this program.
I am having tremendous trouble getting the program to print through my Epson
1520 printer.
Also, I cannot get windows to recognize my ZIP drive.
Any suggestions?

Sincerely,

Nancy

Dear Nancy,

In order to get your windows side to recognize your Zip drive under
Virtual PC, you need to put your Zip disk in the drive and while on your
PC side, hold down the Command key.
Along the bottom of your screen you'll see "Windows" "Eject Floppy",
"Eject CD" and "Folders"

Click on Folders.
A dialogue box will pop up asking what folders you want to share.
Start by clicking on Desktop
Locate the Zip disk you've placed in the drive and click once on it.
Underneath you'll see a button that now says something like "Share
Zip-100"

Below this you'll see a pop up menu which allows you to choose which
drive letter you wish to assign to your Zip disk. (I usually choose G).

Now click on "Share Zip-100" or "whatever your Zip disk is called" and
when you go back to your PC side, if you look in MY COMPUTER you should
see your Zip disk as drive G.

Make sure to go back and unshare the Zip disk before ejecting it, or
your Windows side may lock up.

Hello jay,

There's a Macworld review of Soft Windows v Virtual PC at the address:

00X r/2.0.9.1.0.13.3.19.1>

BTW, I use vpc and I like it. The only thing is, you need to throw a
lot of ram at it to make it work at an acceptable speed.

Another good place to search for reviews of mac products is Tidbits
at http://www.tidbits.com/search/

Hope this helps

Why do you have to use Virtual PC for Quickbooks Pro. Mac has a version
for it. I use it and it is great. Now they aren't supposed to continue
with upgrades, but I used 3.0 for three years ansd never had a problem.

Hello,

Actually i'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this,
but i thought i'd give it a try anyway.

Since Attachmate no longer supports its Irma 3270 emulator for Mac,
we're looking for a good alternative (suited for use on G3s).

We would welcome any ideas or suggestions.

Since the subject of Virtual PC has come up, I am encountering a drive
recognition problem as well. I recently loaded VPC running Win 98 on a
PowerBook G3 300. Everything looked great until I tried to use the floppy.
It isn't recognized. I get a message saying that the drive is not ready.
Any ideas??

Don't know about others' reasons, but I'm the treasurer of a couple of related
non-profit organizations and I have volunteers who enters the information into
the program on their PCs and, more importantly, our auditor uses QBPro on a
PC. Being able to just copy over the year-end files is much easier than having
to work from paper. Of course, if Intuit followed Microsoft's lead (now,
there's an oxymoron!) and had true file compatibility and version status
across platforms, this wouldn't be an issue. Oh well...

Someone still needs a terminal emulator - cool ;).

Try Vicom, they make a pretty good emulator that I believe does 3270.

I haven't used their products in years, but I had great success with White
Pine Software's VT100 emulation (on Mac SEs and VAX clusters -- boy, am I
dating myself!).

They are still in the emulation business, although they are better known today
for C-U-See-Me. Here's a link to get you started...

Sand Castle Systems makes a product called PacerTerm that is excellent.
It comes in Lite and Full version depending on whether you need scripting

I use the Windows QuickBook Pro on SoftWindows because the Mac version
does not support the online payroll. This is the only Window's app I run
on my Mac. I'm not sure what else wasn't updated in the last few years
since the Mac version was revised.

I'm not sure about the other user who originally posted this question.

Word has it that the last Mac version (4.0?) will crash if you enter
a date after 12/31/1999. I don't have the program so I can't confirm

Intuit sent out a free upgrade to all users that made it Y2K compliant. I am using it and haven't had the crash problem on future entrys.

Do you know Scott Meyer w/ Apple? I'd ask him to host it on the liststar machine Apple has at the marketcenter in Dallas. Either that or I can host it on the (apple owned) MOSXS machine I have here (altho I have not played w/ majordomo on OSXS yet).

It's built in to IPNetMonitor, from http://www.sustworks.com - a great little piece of software that is a companion piece to IPNetRouter, which provides all the handy Ping, TraceRoute, Finger, etc. tools that are helpful in the TCP/IP world.
