Which version of Exchange Server are you running? If it's Exchange 5.5,
has it been patched to at least Service Pack 2, which was released in
December?

Also, has the NT server it's riding on top of been patched to at least
SP4 - Preferably SP5?

        Cheers!

I have a PDF Writer in my Chooser as an alterternate to LaserWriter 8.

It goes to Distiller and was part of the whole kit. Sometimes is seems
to work better to save the postscript to file and then use Distiller.
I don't know why and find it easy to not fuss with the Chooser. One
of my copies of the whole kit can as a freebie with FrameMaker and
I got my first as part of some other special.

I was basing my statement on a pretty thorough mining of adobe's ftp site
after Dan said it was free :-/ I don't have Distiller for the Mac, and the
Distiller on my PC came with PageMaker and didn't have the PDF Writer. Adobe's
docs for the Windows PDF Writer on their ftp site say it's only usable with Acrobat.

Oops! I goofed... I thought the Acrobat PDF Chooser Extension was freely
available. It's so damn hard to keep up with application "accessories" such
as this... Especially if they end up in the Extensions Folder!

In any case, there IS an NT4 version available on Adobe's site - Version
3.03 - But it requires a valid serial number for Acrobat Distiller
(?Acrobat Exchange as well??)

As for Ghost & GhostScript (freeware PostScript=AE clone), you get what you
pay for. `Ya pay your dues, `ya take your chances. However, keep in mind
that unlike single author shareware & freeware, GNU stuff is done by
committee, and (especially) Mac stuff can run into stability problems.

        Cheers!

The PDFWriter that's on the server is really an updater for
3.x for NT - and yes, it does indeed require Windows. I keep
considering writing my own PDFWriter (now that I'm not at Adobe
anymore), but then I find other things to do...

It generates "so so" PDF's - they work fine with Acro3 but
Acro4 is a bit more picky about PDF's and the GS ones tend to make it
unhappy.

Yes, and guess what? When I went to install it, it asked for a serial
number. So far, so good. BUT, Acrobat Distiller was installed as part of
PageMaker 6.52, and when I entered my "Product Lifetime" serial number
from when I registered Aldus PageMaker 5.0/Windows the updater crapped
out... The serial number is of the form 03-5004-123456789 (not the correct
last 9 digits). I have licenses for Aldus PageMaker 4.2/Mac and
5.0/Windows, which I have legally upgraded & cross-graded at version 5.0.
When I installed PageMaker 6.5 I also was provided a copy of Acrobat
Distiller which installed with the same *legal* serial number as my
PageMaker 6.5 Upgrade.

Leonard: Who at Adobe gets bug reports?

Yeah, Acrobat 4 is indeed pretty picky as Adobe gets ready for InDesign's
launch with native Acrobat 4 file support.

Yeah, I put the suggestion in to Adobe some time ago that thier postscript
driver should include a rudimentary 'Write to PDF function' no optimization,
no playing with the fonts, no bookmarks, etc, just make a %@$@# .pdf file. I
suggested it would go a long way to make .PDFs the standard, but, do they
listen to me?

Belushimode/ But noooooooo! /Belushimode ;-)

Yeah every time I've tried it with GS they're all jaggy and ugly, even using
the default 'postscript fonts'. But I've also not done a lot with it.

So Leonard, hows MacHack going? (saw you quoted in the Macintouch report ;-)
