The solution:

No. 1) Don't use Microsoft fonts
No. 2) Use only Adobe Type 1 Postscript fonts
No 3) Corollary to Rule #2: Never, ever, use TrueType fonts.

I manage a technical publications department, using a Macintosh in a Windows
environment. We do not have problems with fonts.
