        David,

You are almost correct, but it's not so much size as it is speed... And
the resultant heat generated.

Several years ago, FWB (since divided & the hardware half driven into
bankruptcy) did not recommend installing a 7200 RPM drive into any case
smaller than a Quadra 950, due to cooling. This is also why you saw the
rash of hard drive failures in the PowerMac 8100/80AV's: The 2.1 gig 7200
RPM hard drives literally cooked themselves.

The solution is to use a fan assembly like the one from APS
<http://www.apstech.com> - This is the one that has three CPU fans mounted
on the left side of the sled. You can build one of these with a soldering
iron, some Super Glue, and 3 of these fans as well: Make sure you get ball
bearing fans for pentium's or 586's, and you'll be fine. Alternately, I
like to use a single 60mm fan for the bottom bay, especially if it has a
1.5" high (half-height) drive in it. Alas, an 80mm fan - much more commonly
available - doesn't quite fit.

One issue not addressed by the $49 APS fan kit is cooling the electronics
on the bottom of the drive. This is done by mounting the drive on 3/16"
standoffs. I've used threaded brass motherboard standoffs, as well as 3/16"
long x 3/16" (or so) diameter plastic tubes, with 1/2" or 5/8" long screws.
With this, air blows across both the bottom and top of the drive.

This is also why I recommend Bay Coolers - Now down to $12 at Chip
Merchant - for clone & pc cases, to cool drives even more. The cooler you
can keep a hard drive, the longer it will last.

        Hope this helps!
        Dan
