        Dear Tom,

Performa's were generally crippled versions of the corresponding Quadra
and PPC 6100 models. For example, the P63x series used the 68LC040 CPU,
while the Q630 used the full version, i.e. the P63x lacked the integral
math coprocessor in the CPU - That's what the "LC in 68LC040 stands for.
Also, the Performa 61xx series only ran at 60 mHz and lacked the 256
kilobyte L2 cache that the 6100/66 had... Essentially, Apple was grading
out 601 CPU chips and the bottom of the barrel ended up in Performa 61xx's.
In all cases, the Performa's have the same ROM as the corresponding Quadra,
LC, or PowerMac model so proceed as you normally would.

In your case, *definitely* upgrade the machine to System 7.5.1; or 7.6.1
if they need to use the TCP/IP stack for Internet access. Also, for about
$40 or so you can buy a 68040RC3/33 - The 33 mHz 68040 with FPU. Since
System 7.1, Apple "borrowed" the technology from DayStar to route all SANE
(Standard Apple Numeric Event) calls (binary math) to the FPU for better
CPU usage... This essentially doubles the overall performance, especially
with QuickDraw calls...

        Cheers!
        Dan
