I had a similar problem with the hard drive on my new Powerbook last week:
a flashing question mark and an unrecognizable/unmountable drive when
booting externally. Neither Disk First Aid, Norton Utilities 4.0, or
Techtool Pro 2.1.1 could do a thing with it. Then I tried Alsoft's
DiskWarrior, and it did the trick. It was able to rebuild the file
directory so that the drive was mountable and accessible again.

That was my first experience with Diskwarrior and I was quite impressed.
Its kind of expensive, but I figured it paid for itself that first time.

Good luck,

Jerry
