[WinMac] Flashing Question Mark

One of our Mac users was transferring files from her Mac (PowerMac 7600/120
OS 8.5.1) to an NT 4.0 SP3) Server when it suddenly flashed a message to the
effect "an error of type [a number she can't remember] has occurred]", then
displayed the disk icon with a flashing question mark inside it.

I tried booting with a Disk Tools 8.5.1 disk, but it gave me a dialog box
asking if I wanted to initialize the hard drive. Same thing when I booted
from an external hard drive containing a universal install of the Mac OS.

Unfortunately the last full backup was done in November. Does anyone have
any ideas how the data can be saved or know of a good data recovery company?
