I've not seen anyone address this issue either, but I can tell you that in
any instance of it occurring here, NT was not involved. There are several
dozen HP 4m+ and such around & maybe 4 or 5 in a year will forget it's
AppleTalk name. There are two however which have forgotten their names
twice or more often in the last 12 months.

It's not just the AppleTalk name either... people using IBM more or less
compatibles are also not able to print to them at that same time, but I
don't know if they were using JetDirect or a Novell queue.

My bet is something in the JetDirect card itself, responding to some bad
info it received over the line. I dunno - I just change the name back, tell
people to re-select it in the Chooser & go on with their lives. Would be
nice to know why though.

Cheers, Grae.

I hate to disagree with Leonard, as I respect the work he has done and
the help he has given many as well as the fact that he knows infinitely
more about computers, Macs & programing then I will ever know, but that
can't be true as I have been using Silverlining 5.8.3 on two HFS+
partitions ever since system 8.1 came out with no problems.

Actually, the AppleTalk naming and zone membership is handled in the
PostScript=AE SIMM(s), not in the MIO card. I discovered this about 4 years
ago when I upgraded (replaced) my LJ4M from the original LocalTalk MIO card
to a $300 JetDirect 2552 MIO card.

It could be that the NVRAM on the PostScript=AE SIMM(s) isn't=20
working fully
up to snuff. Throw a test page and look at the copy counter to see if it
too has reset. The NVRAM should last almost forever, because on my (>5 year
old) LJ4M it was disconnected from the 120 volt power for almost 8 weeks
when it was in my old location. When I powered it back up a few weeks ago,
all the settings were exactly where I left them.

        Cheers!

Our Telecommunications department runs an IBM minicomputer that
controls the magnetic ID-reading door locks on many campus buildings and
facilities. They supply some PC-based software which uses TCP/IP to allow
users to add/delete Student ID's to/from the list and to change the
lock/unlock schedule on the doors. They don't supply Mac software. Would
a product such as SoftWindows 98 allow our secretary's Power PC to look
like a PC to the windows software? Are there any other alternatives?

Thanks,
Bill

Hello everyone,

A winmac subscriber's recent post about a complex procedure to follow for properly installing Macintosh services under NT 5 surprised me by their redundancy, and I checked this information with an expert friend of mine, who recommended the WINNT-L@PEACH.EASE.LSOFT.COM list for NT-only discussions. I'm appending what he wrote.

He [The Winmac subscriber] wrote

Well, you apply services for Mac on the initial install then the service pack updates it, so no need to apply the service pack twice. Same for IIS. RDISK is just a standard emergency boot disk, that one creates multiple time primarily when changing or adding hardware. BTW, the Compaq servers are generally sold with an automated build of Windows NT, including the service packs, so one generally does not go through this install stuff unless you are using a pirated copy of NT server. All this defragging stuff (DiskKeeper) is a complete waste of time on a fresh install.

>CONSPICUOUS BY ITS ABSENCE: Any stuff from Compaq.

There are no HAL files from Compaq on NT server (on HP does this).

This is nonsense. Compaq has an entire office in MS's Redmond HQ for NT development, and has for over 5 years. All new NT development goes through Compaq machines before it sees beta.
