Yes, OT will run on `030's and even the `020-equiped LC & LCII, AND it
will run under System 7.1 as well. I just wouldn't try it with a non-32 bit
"clean" Mac...

Win Mac Gurus,
My company is installing an imagesetter later this year. I can't talk my
prepress manager out of using Rampage for the RIP. This solution
requires a high performance NT server for filesharing with our Mac
clients. I would like to build the server (I can get the parts for less
than half of what our vendors are quoting and build a much better
product) but I've never a)set up a raid or b)setup an NT server for
filesharing with Macs. Neither of these two things seems that difficult
but I don't want to hang my neck out there and not be successful!!!

Question 1:
I'm considering an Adaptec AAA-133 3 channel raid controller controlling
two 4.5 gig cheetahs in a mirrored raid (need redundancy for the main
server) and three 36 gig Ultrastar ZX's in a striped raid 5
configuration with parity for the RIP/Mac clients. I need the raid 5
drive broken into 2 volumes (one for the RIP, one for the Mac clients).
Is there a way to do this with the raid controller or will I need to
create the 72 gig volume under raid and then create two partitions under
NT?

Question 2:
Is this correct-all I need to do on the server to install services for
Macintosh, go into the services control panel and enable file sharing
for Macintosh in order to share files with my Mac Clients (OS 8.1 on all
clients)?

Question 3:
Am I really asking for trouble or is this whole process as
straightforward as it seems? I have a list of the hardware I'm using if
anyone needs to look it over before offering up an answer to this last
question...

I'm on the digest so if you can email me directly in addition to
responding to the list I'd appreciate that greatly
Thanks in advance

Hi,
We have run into a problem several times with not being able to delete files=
from NT 4 because they are being 'held onto' by the IIS web server (we thin=
k).

The latest occurrence happened after while trying to FTP word documents up=
to the server from a Mac. Even the sys admin over there can't delete the=
files locally and now we are waiting for a reboot this weekend to replace=
 the files.

I can understand the file being open and not being able to be replaced if we=
have the doc open in Word locally, but this is on a remote server. It=
can't be caused by viewing the Word Doc over http, can it? Perhaps a=
problem FTP from a Mac is causing? Could Service Pack 5 help?

Any ideas or insight is appreciated.

Thanks,
George

Look for an application (usually installed in the Apple Extras folder)
called Network Software Selector. On your machines, OS 7.5.3 and 7.5.5
install both OT and classic, but will default to classic. Use this
application to switch between the two networking protocols. If you
decide to stick with OT, then update to 1.1.2.

By the way, you can check to see if OT is installed by using a program
that lets you see invisible files, such as ResEdit. Look for the OT
control panels AppleTalk and TCP/IP in Control Panels folder that are
invisible when you have classic networking selected.

take care,
Victor

Cheers! Dan

-------------------- I was trying to get the word out about MacServerIP availability for Alpha NT but can not seem to subscribe to the group. Could Either of you post the following for me.

Regards,

Josh Lampl Team ASA

MacServerIP Integrates AppleShare IP with Win NT (Intel and DEC Alpha)

MacServerIP is the first AppleShare type server for Windows-NT to support the Apple File Protocol over TCP/IP across Macintosh and Windows NT platforms. MacServerIP is 2 to 4 times faster than Windows-NT Services For Macintosh (SFM). MacServerIP users access the NT server via the standard AppleShare IP interface.

An Intel and Dec Alpha version are currently shipping.

Team ASA Inc is distributing the product and can be reached at http://www.teamasa.com/ . (Team ASA also distributes gigabit ethernet network adapters for Macintosh and Windows NT).

This announcement was made because the poster believes it to be relevant to your newsgroup.

Let me clarify: Throw a PS test page to each printer, which lists the IP address and (stack - independent) MAC address on the sheet...

Actually, he may not know the physical location of all those printers, since they are just somewhere in the ether.

Go to the printer you are interested in and physically punch its buttons to get the menu, and print a test page. It will have all the jetdirect info on the test page, part of which will be the card's address, which is what is used in making up the generic name you see in the chooser.

Better yet, get the installation diskettes and run the jetadmin program, and give the printer a name that you understand. (Unless you have one of those futuristic computers with no floppy drive--In that case, get someone else to run it for you.)

Dear Scott,

I would avoid the adapcrap RAID adapters - Especially the AAA series - Because they suck up valuable CPU cycles. Use a Mylex controller instead...

Go to the Network Control Panel, click on the Services tab and add Services For Macintosh. Just be sure to reapply SP3 and the post-SP3 SFM hotfixes at a minimum - SP5 preferred. (SP5 is pretty benign, as opposed to SP4: It's mostly an agglomeration of hotfixes and security patches.)

Yes, let's take a look at it. Also, if the RIP software is AlphaNT-native, check out the Compaq DS10 at the links below. But be prepared to stand in line: Engineering firms and animation studios have blocks of hundreds of these boxes ordered for rendering farms and Beowulf clusters, and the backlog is incredible.
