Marc Bizer was kind enough to tell me about this list. I have looked
through the archives and didn't find an answer to my question. I have
also done searches of Microsoft's web site and did not find anything.

I would like to transfer my Outlook Express email on the Mac to
Outlook 98 on Windows 98. I am been looking for information on how to
accomplish this. On the Mac, my email is stored on my hard drive and
I do not have access to a server to upload to my email to and then
download back down to the PC. The mail will be stored on the PC (if
it gets there. :-) ) The server approach seemed to be a suggestion I
saw on the archives.

Actually, I am using Eudora 4.2 on the Mac. Outlook Express for the
Mac will directly import the Eudora mailboxes. Is it possible to
import my mailboxes on the Mac (either Eudora or OE) into Netscape
Navigator and then transfer the Navigator mailboxes from Mac to PC
and then import from Netscape to Outlook 98? Whew! :-)

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello! I am struggling to make my little network of Macs and 1 win98
laptop to work.

I want to connect a new Win98 laptop to our small appletalk network.
There are a couple of Macs connected to an HP4000N. The Macs share files
using 10T Ethernet running over Appletalk and Appleshare. Everything on
the Mac side works wonderful and installed without any problems.

When I visit clients, I use Dave on the Mac laptop to connect to NT
networks and Win98 machines. I have tried to get the Win98 laptop to
speak to the Macs by enabling Dave on the Macs. I can't get this to
work. I can't get the Win98 laptop to speak to the printer via the
Ethernet cable either.

Could someone help set me in the correct direction? I am having a
terrible time trying to figure out how to use this Wintel laptop. (It is
counter intuitive to me.)

TIA
Philip

We use a prodcut called "PC MacLAN" to connect PCs to our AppleTalk
network.
It works like a charm.

Either PCMacLAN or COPSTalk might do the trick. These programs install
on the Win side and allow the AppleShare server to show up in the
Network Neighborhood.

It appears that Philip already has DAVE installed on the Macs, and so
installing PCMacLAN or COPSTalk would be redundant - you only need the Macs
to talk Microsoft Networking (ie, DAVE) or the Wintel to talk AppleTalk,
NOT both.

It would appear then, that problem is either that DAVE is not configured
correctly on the Macs, OR, Microsoft Networking is not configured correctly
on the Wintel.

Can you give us some idea of how you have configured the networking on both
sides?

I haven't tried just this, but Outlook 98's import-export wizard can
import Eudora mailboxes and address books. As far as I can make out, it
looks for an existing Eudora installation and grabs the stuff from that.

I don't know how it recognises an existing installation - at a guess by
the existence of the registry key My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Qualcomm\Eudora - so it's probably
simplest to install Eudora Light on the PC.
On the PC, a Eudora mailbox seems to consist of two files (e.g. IN.MBX
and IN.TOC, OUT.MBX and OUT.TOC). Eudora seems to recognise all .MBX
files in its folder as mailboxes, and regenrates the .TOC files as
necessary, so you should only need to copy and rename the Mac
equivalents of the .MBX files. On the PC, these are to be text files, so
you may also need to convert the newlines from CR to CR+LF.

Once again, there's no easy way to migrate among MS products,
cross-platform.

The good news is you don't need to have access to a dedicated IMAP mail
server.

Check out http://www.mailandnews.com which provides a free, web-based IMAP4
mail account, accessible from a number of e-mail clients, as well. Although
they have a 4MB or so storage limit, you can upload a fair number of
messages to this server, then download them to Outlook 98. I did this a few
months ago (PC to Mac, in my case), and I also took the opportunity to
become less of a packrat, and culled or archived a *lot* of old messages
before sending them up to the server. It also helps to have a cable modem
<g>.

Good luck!

Do you have *any* network connectivity? Can you use a web browser? Win9*
networking settings are in the Network Control Panel. Under the
Configuration tab you need "Client for Microsoft Networks", "TCP/IP", and
if you want to share files *from* the Win98 laptop, "File and Printer
sharing for Microsoft Networks". You also need to have your network adapter
listed there. Under the Identity tab you need a unique computer name (<15
characters) and the workgroup name set to match what the other computers on
the network are using. How TCP/IP is set up will depend upon the network.

To use the HP4000 you need HP JetAdmin Utilities installed. If it's not too
old it will add "Add HP JetDirect Printer" to its Programs sub-menu.

This may sound like a stupid question, but I am good at those. :-)

I am presently using Eudora 4.2 for the Mac. All my email is stored on my hard drive on the Mac. How do I uploa the mail messages from my hard drive to the web-based IMAP4 mail account?

Thanks.

Oops, forgot one thing. Mailandnews.com can be either a web-based mail client, or be accessed from within any IMAP mail client, such as MS Outlook and probably Eudora. You just have to set up Eudora to see your IMAP account, which is explained in the FAQ section of http://www.mailandnews.com

Sorry.
