Thanks, now I can concentrate on REALLY USEFUL stuff like LInux ;)

It really means a lot to me to pass these bloody tests, since I come from
a Mac background. And the only reason I include it in my signature is
that you guys (other geeks like me) are the only ones who understand what
that means ;)

I ended up using a Hosts file like the following and Dave
started to work perfectly for me:

ED1 CNAME ed1.sched.pitt.edu
ed1.sched.pitt.edu A 136.142.66.171
ED3 CNAME ed3.sched.pitt.edu
ed3.sched.pitt.edu A 136.142.68.102

If you have a WINS Server it also works perfectly.

Dear List,

I use Macs and have received a PC originated Word97 file which contains
Russian text.

My set-up has Russian Keyboard Kit, plus Cyrillic fonts. File opens OK
using Office 98 but not Russian!?!

Does anyone have any ideas what I should do to access this file.

Cheers,

Geoff Cross (Harrogate)

Gareth, I agree that the documentation could be better, but it is worth
persevering. I use Dave at multiple client sites to attach my powerbook
directly to Win98 machines (file sharing) and NT networks. My clients
wouldn't allow using Mac NT services nor would I expect them to
accommodate my needs.

I have found it is actually easier to set-up Dave to connect to a NT
network than to figure out how to get a Win98 machine connected and
running. Perhaps I was lucky that my client's IT resource was available
for 30 seconds to give me the info to connect to the network. It took
the same person trying to connect a Win98 machine over an hour to get
connected.

All that was required was to set up TCP/IP control panel on the
powerbook and then the Dave control panel info. The TCP/IP network
address was entered as a new location/setting and in Dave TCP/IP was
selected, pswd and user id entered and voila! Now I just wish I could
print to non-postscript printers somehow. I haven't used any of the
other features etc. of Dave, so I can't comment how easy they are to get
going.

The only problem that I am having is with one client who doesn't have an
resident NT network admin. The never available outsourced person refuses
to tell me the IP address since he thinks that I don't need the info.
Since they aren't using the DHCP (dynamic ???? something or other) but
TCP/IP, I need the IP address to enter into the TCP/IP control panel to
connect via Dave. What is so secret about the IP address I'll never know
....

Good luck.
Philip

I've no experience with foreign languages but it might be a missing font
problem. From the originated PC in MS Word 97 have the user go to Tools
--> Options --> Save and then check the box for "Embed TrueType Fonts"
and resave the file.

Philip:

You can always go to a windoze 95 box and get its IP address; and then try to connect to the LAN using other address' in the subnet. If the address is already in use, then Open Transport will not connect... Cheers! Dan

If you enable the printing support in the Dave control panel you'll be able to use non PostScript printers with Dave if they're shared on a Windows network.

Why aren't they using WINS at that one client's location? If they are using a WINS server and you plug it's IP address into Dave you'll be able to access the entire network with no problems.

Thanks to all who wrote to me in regard to the problem I was having with FrontPage. Actually the solution to the immediate problem was rather easy--once we negated every possible problem on the NT side.

What was happening was that there was not enough memory allocated to FrontPage Explorer on my Mac side, even though I had stepped it up to 10,000K. I stepped it up to 20K and presto, the site then downloaded with no problem, and no "Unexpected Exception" notices. I heard from more than a few others on the list who were experiencing the same problem, and yep, the additional memory allocation worked every time.

Thanks for all the suggestions on what we might want to do going forward with other programs as well. We are going to get the new site up and get the bugs out first--and then take a longer look at where we go from that point.

Thanks again!
