Yes, you're right. I'd only been using it for some really basic printers
and I forgot that detail.

There's always the option of BUYING a RIP, I guess, but that would be
severe overkill...

Yeah, I can't believe I forgot to mention this option. I use one to print
to my OkiPage 6e; with a 2-parallel port buffer I share the thing to my
Mac and my PC. But my Mac has only one serial port (a laptop) and I STILL
have to swap cables whenever I want to print. I read the the PortJuggler
people are coming out with software soon that will be compatible with
MacOS 8.5...

A whole bunch of 'em now support DHCP (like Anarchie) due mainly to the
fact that they let other pieces of the OS manage the TCIP/IP socket.
Anarchie will querie the Internet setup applet in OS 8.5 (or the Internet
config applet by Peter Lewis). And some have their own settings, like
Transmit.

This is not true! We have a couple of HP printers at the office and they
do fine with postscript binary data. Unless you are referring to
downloading some types of binary files in particular...

The Mac writes postscript code in binary by default. Although you can
change this from some applications, if you have placed EPS graphics is a
file and choose ASCII code, the EPSs might contain embedded binary data.
However this has never been a problem printing to these HP printers using
the AdobePS 8.5.1 and PSPrinter drivers which will send the code in
binary.

That's the only drivers we use, we don't use HP's drivers for these
printers, so far so good.

Why do they have a user page in between? You mean a banner page? If it's
an NT separator page, there could be more to the way they are set up.
Autoswitching printers read the header of the document and determine what
laguage it is. Sometimes this doesn't work right and you have to force
them to switch (with a separator page for example).

>When I print from QuarkXPress I get the warning that I

No. NT print spoolers support binary printing. In fact, the default when
you set up a driver in NT is to leave the data as RAW. This means that
whatever the client sends is what the server will send to the printer. In
this configuration, the NT server will not even touch the code, just act
as a bucket to receive the code you send and forward it to the printer,
doesn't matter id it's PCL, Postscript or Esperanto.

When you set the printers up, did you type in the PRINTER'S IP address of
the NT server's IP address? Make sure you typed in the printer's address,
not the NT server's. You should be able to go straight LPR to the printer
whose LPD daemon will catch the request and process it.

A list hosted by Daniel L. Schwartz, Electrical Engineer??? No thanks,
every message probably comes with a complementary Jobs-bashing,
Stevefying example and a list of reasons why NT/Alpha is the ONLY good
platform in the world...

Just kidding. ;)

you say this list will focus on NT and Mac integration at a Server level,
did I understand this correctly?

        That's "Stevifying" -- C'mon, spell it right :)

Yes you did... There's already a few compaqted "Digits" on the list, as
well as someone from JPL, Intel, and a couple each from Alpha Processor,
Inc. (API) and MS.

BUT: This is a *companion* list to the WinMac list... Not a competitor.
Basically, this is for specifically for enterprise Mac <-> NT connectivity;
and it dives into the guts of both NT as well as the MacOS. It's
specifically *not* for either DOS-based windoze, linux, or NetWare...
That's for this WinMac list.

Again, Congratulatyions on passing your MCSE exams!

        Cheers!
        Dan
