It sounds as if the optional authentication Theresa refers to
below has been turned on. The default UAM is Apple's built-in
version (which, among other things, passes passwords in clear
text and has an 8 character limit) but you can substitute other
methods by putting the UAM in /system folder/appleshare folder/;
then, when you try to connect to an NT volume, it will give you
a choice as to which authentication method to use.

The file gets created automatically when you create a Mac volume
on an NT server (you may have to reboot to see it). It's called
MS UAM.
