[WinMac] NTFS speedup, esp. with Services For Macintosh

        Dear Friends:

        A while back, on March 27, I advised you to bypass traverse
checking on an NT Server that does not need auditing: This is a one
of the worst default hangups of NTFS, and is the single mod I make on
any NT box as soon as I install NT.

        This is extra important if you have Services for Macintosh
(SFM) enabled, and you have a lot of files (into the thousands) on
the server. What happens is that if you do a Find File from the Mac
on the server volume, you can get an "apparent" hang from the Mac
client. This is documented nicely at:

 <http://www.darryl.com/winmacfaq/winmacfaq-3.html>, and at:

<http://support.microsoft.com/support/ntserver/serviceware/nts40/76ewzatkc.a
sp>.

        Here is how to shut off traverse checking on the NT server,
and also on an
NT4 workstation using RegEdit:

 +++++++++++++++++

        Add the following:
NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate REG_DWORD=1
        to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\

 +++++++++++++++++

        Before proceeding, make an updated copy of your ERD with:
 RDISK.EXE /S (The /S switch includes the SAM database). Remember, don't be
a N.E.R.D. - No Emergency Repair Disk

        If you are uncomfortable with RegEdit, don't panic: I've
created a small
.REG file that does this automatically... Just double-click on the file and
reboot at your convenience.

-> I'll eMail this small file to anyone who requests it -- Just drop me a
line with "Bypass Traverse Checking file" in the subject field.

        Here is the source (contents) of the file... You can also
right-click on
the file and select "Edit" in the popup menu to view the contents to verify
it for yourself.

 --------------

REGEDIT4
;
; NTFS_Bypass_Traverse_Checking.REG - Version 4.03.00
;
;
; This data file will add a registry entry to bypass traverse checking,
; i.e. disabling the "Last Access Update" function of NTFS
;
; This registry entry is applied by the regedit.exe program. Go to
; Windows Explorer and double-click on sym_256K.reg or at a command
; prompt type:
;
; regedit NTFS_Bypass_Traverse_Checking.REG
;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem]
"NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate"=dword:1
;
; Note: The system must be rebooted for this setting to take effect.
