        Dear Matti,

In regards to the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), yes and no... With
ASIP running on top of MacOS 8.5.1, it probably would work. With OS/X
server, most likely not because there is no software to monitor the port
and initiate the graceful shutdown.

 ----

As I sit here thinking about it, there is a POSSIBLE back door, if you
also have an NT or NetWare box hooked up to the LAN as well .AND. it also
has a *monitored* UPS hooked to it .AND. you are using 3rd party UPS
software .AND. the two boxes are plugged into the same circuit breaker
branch .AND. the hub connecting them is also on a UPS .AND. everything is
behind a firewall:

Have the NT or NetWare box generate an SNMP trap and send it to the Apple
box over the LAN, telling it to initiate a graceful shutdown. However, I
try to shut down SNMP on switches & routers because by its' very nature,
security is pretty poor. [I use a direct serial cable connection and
disable SNMP & TELNET.]

Also, the SNMP implementation on the MacOS isn't too robust to begin with,
because it adds even more Extensions... I like to run Macs "lean and mean"
with as few INIT's and CDEV's as possible.

In any case, Matti, you are wise to monitor MacInTouch and MacFixIt if you
own or support Macs... Personally, I prefer MacInTouch because Ric Ford is
more concise (helping me cut down on information overload), but both sites
are quite good.

        Cheers!
        Dan
