[WinMac] Sharing a modem on a small network

I thought I'd sum up the responses to my earlier post requesting information
about which software to use in order to have a modem shared on a network of
six new Gateway Wintel (Win98) systems for internet access. I was
particularly interested in having an old Macintosh as the gateway computer.

Almost everyone agreed that the old Mac computers (Q605) would work and that
either IPNetMonitor or VicomSoft's two products, Internet Gateway and
SoftRouter Plus, would do the trick. I will probably go with the IPNetMonitor
because of its lower price. As the company expands, SoftRouter Plus may be
adopted.

There are, of course, Wintel programs that do the same thing, Sygate probably
being the most recommended program in the group. But, many remarked that the
network is only as stable as the computer using it. The computer goes down,
and email access for everyone is down as well. Hence, using one of the
available Mac computers is a real advantage.

I should be setting up the modem sharing in the next month and I'll let
everyone know about my experience since I suspect the topic that interests
people. If I'm wrong, let me know.

One final point: I originally searched the WinMac web site for information on
this topic, and, as someone pointed out to me after I had posted my request,
this topic had recently been raised (unfortunately, it was under a subject
heading I did not know was related and so I had skipped those messages). It
seems to me that someone should make an addition to the website for this topic
and maybe even an article for Computer Currents? There's plenty of demand.

Thanks again for everyone's help. Y'all were extremely helpful, and I wish I
could thank each individually.

take care,
Victor
