Stable? If the Mac still shows a blinking "?", your system is far from stable.

It is normal to see one for up to a few seconds while the boot
sequence initiates (board-level self-tests and the like). But if it
remains there indefinitely, your Mac has failed to find a viable
volume from which to boot. Start digging for the CDs that came with
it.

At the very least you'll be able to boot from the CD-ROM and run Disk
First Aid (I call it the LPN program. It has the training to
recognize problems, but rarely has the qualifications to actually DO
anything about it.) and see if there are any problems. You're better
off with something more robust like Norton Utilities or TechTool Pro.
