Having just gone through this with another government agency, the DOD
wipe in MacTools Pro was satisfactory for the mac. As it happened, the
people supervising the process would not have known the difference
between that and a simple erase. But, we did it by the book.

It writes 4 passes over the entire disk (if you have already erased the
entire disk completely), 00,FF,00,F6. Their documentation said this was
the official DOD method. Note that MacTools is a number of years old
now, so there may be a change in the specs. But, repeating zeros does
not sound as good.
