Depending on the manufacturer of the hard drive, there may exist diagnostic
software to write all zeros to the drive. I know Western Digital has such a
program, it's called WDDIAG and you download it from the western digital
website. I'm pretty sure Seagate et al. have similar programs.

For military-grade security you are required to write zeros to the drive
seven times unitl it is considered to be "clean".
