I haven't gone that far back but I have done this:

Bought a B&W G3/400 with MacOS 8.5.1 (English) in the particular
software ROM version that should be called 8.5.2 or something like
that.

Since I want to run the Japanese OS I pop in my 8.5-J installer CD,
(honestly bought in Tokyo), and try to reboot. No go.

After I figured out the above thing about the software ROM issue I
ran a universal installer of 8.5-J on another machine onto a ZIP drive,
and updated that to 8.5.1-J .

After reformatting and repartitioning the 9 GB drive in the B&W into
three partitions I finally copied the Japanese 8.5.1 volume over to
one of the partitions and tossed the existing ROM in the Japanese
system folder and replaced that with the ROM from the English
System folder.

After changing startup drives to the partition with the Japanese OS,
rebooting into Japanese went flawlessly.

Too bad Apple's support staff were so tight-lipped about this little
trick. Well, now I can happily run OS 8.5.1-J on my B&W!
