Lesley,

As others have reported, Opt-8 generates a "bullet" for me in Office 98 as
well as other apps. At first I thought the problem you're experiencing
might be a preference set in MS Word (or other Office 98 app). I found
there were several in the Compatibility and Edit pages which could have an
effect.

However, since you report Key Caps denies you this character as well, I
wonder if the Keyboard control panel should be checked. Mine indicates it's
using a US-Roman set, but I checked using Australian-Roman and could get the
"bullet" under Key Caps. Could your setting be different? Maybe the
Keyboard Preferences should be deleted and regenerated.
