Alex,

The MS Proxy Server 2.0 has 3 seperate functions: Web Proxy, which MS states
"supports HTTP, FTP and GOPHER for computers running TCP/IP"; WinSock Proxy,
which MS states "supports Windows Sockets client applications"; and finally
there is SOCKS Proxy, which MS states "is a cross-platform mechanism" which
"supports SOCKS version 4.3a"
SOURCE: Microsoft Official Curriculum "Secure Web Access Using Microsoft
Proxy Server 2.0" Course Number 836(b) Module 1, page 19.

As you'll notice, the only part of MS Proxy 2.0 that is *explicitly* cross
platform is the SOCKS implementation, and that is only SOCKS 4.3a, not the
more recent versions of SOCKS.

In my experience as an instructor I have not found a way to *fully* support
Macintosh clients thru MS Proxy 2.0. I know that there are some Mac clients
that support SOCKS 4.3a (for FTP, Anarchie Pro comes to mind) but I don't
recommend using MS Proxy 2.0 on a cross-platform network.

As it stands, you should be able to access FTP via SOCKS thru MS Proxy 2.0
by first enabling SOCKS Proxy on the MS Proxy Server and then opening the
correct ports (20 & 21) on that portion of the Server. Finally, make sure
that you're using a SOCKS version 4.3a compatible FTP client.

I hope this helps,

So is FTP from the Mac. Without a proxy client, it doesn't matter how I
configure my Mac's prefs for ftp proxies (ports 21 & 20) it never goes
out. I've trid from different apps to no avail since Microsoft proxy
wants everything to go out of port 80 (wich is for HTTP). I don't know if
there is a way to change this in the Microsoft proxy settings and neither
does out Chief Technologist at work... :(
