        Well Alex, there's your answer: Your hard drive has bad blocks.

        If you perform a low-level format, these (logical) blocks will be mapped
out at the driver level.

        If you want to have some fun, throw the drive onto a Mac and low-level
format it with Silverlining: This will allow you to actually see the bad
block location (address).

        Keep in mind, though, that on a SCSI drive there are already "factory" bad
blocks that are mapped out in firmware; and these will not show up during
the low level format.
