Another great example of marketing innovation. Yes, USB has been around and
available for awhile, being pushed on a market that saw no need for it. Suddenly
a hot product *requires* USB support, and consumers are demanding devices for
it. In marketing-speak, this is called "pull." And it's always better to have
"pull" than "push" if you can manage it. With the iMac, Apple managed to ignite
demand for an innovative product/standard that just wasn't going anywhere.

Another good example of this is when Apple created Firewire, the industry trades
lauded it as a great innovation. But Apple was not in a position to create
demand for it, and was smart enough (this time at least) not to try to push it
into the market -- where it likely would have sat for years, just like USB. Now,
the adoption of Firewire in digital cameras and digital video is creating
demand, and "pull" is forcing it into the marketplace.
