I recently installed a clean version of NT 4.0 on my AlphaServer and used
the files created with the Emergency Repair utility to keep all of my
security settings and users. I also used Disk Administrator to restore my
partition information on the 8 disk drives in the system. I use striped
sets and striped sets with parity for all of my data files.

The files created with the Emergency Repair utility are actually just
backups of registry hives on your system and can be used individually or as
a group to restore settings on your system using the Install program's
repair option. There is also a utility available in the Resource Kit for
backing up and restoring the registry files but the name escapes me at the
moment.

You must keep in mind that you can only restore registries in like versions
of WINNT. You can't for example restore NT 4.0 SP1 registries to NT 4.0 SP3
(I tried, doesn't work).

Also, the Emergency Repair Disk contains all of your security information
for your system and should be safegaurded. Mine are in a limited access
safe.

BTW, I use Services for Macintosh and have not had any of the problems I
have read about with the exception of the jumping icons. After installing
the sfm-fixa hotfix I have had no problems.
