The simplest way I know (using Open Transport) is to open the TCP/IP control
panel and select "Get Info" from the File menu. It'll bring up a screen
listing (among other items) the Hardware Address of the network interface
currently selected.

With systems still using Classic Networking (MacTCP & Network control
panels) you need to Option-click on an ethernet port's icon within the
control panel. That'll display the hardware address beneath the icon.
