i had picked the list's collective brain about this issue a while back.

it is now not an issue. microsoft's latest release of the outlook client
for macintosh seems to have greatly reduced (dare i say, eliminated) the
issue. before this version the attachments were getting encoded in a
format not useable when sent to a windows user (with a .bin extension)
and would crop up if the file was sent internally or to someone off site.
stuffit expander 2.0 for the windows would not decode the file either.

the macintosh client is part of the service pack 2 of exchange server and
is available by itself here:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/exchange/exchange-public/fixes/Eng/Exchg5.5/
Sp2/Mac/

note: to my knowledge the exchange 5.5 service pack 2 was NOT installed
on the exchange
server, so those who do not have the means to update the server
need not worry, the
      client works anyway.

thought that might be of use to someone.
