[WinMac] blast from the past

On one of the platforms I frequent (if only infrequently), the subject
of media that can be read years and years in the future came up. Tonight
I got a pleasant exercise in retrieving some ancient Mac files.

In search of a booklet I had written about a talk I gave at Oxford
back in 1990, I dug up the ancient, now-a-bookend Syquest 40MB cartridge
drive tonight. Put in the cartridge on which I expected to find the material.
Crashed the computer. Tried another cartridge, just in case. Managed to read
it. Found a cartridge that might have contained the data, but it was one
volume out of a Retrospect backup set, and I have been through several
versions of Retrospect since those days.

Much to my surprise, Retrospect was able to read the data, reconstruct a catalog, and, to my delight, the files I wanted were present. Upon restore I was even able to open the specific file, untouched since 1990 (Quark Express version 2.1?) in my current version of XPress.

I'm impressed. By gum, it's time to grab those FastBack floppies and see
if I can do something similar on my PC!
