Here's what I wrote Jesse Berst after reading his piece on the proposed
$1 port charge for FW (FireWire)

==================

"About Apple's $1 per-port FireWire royalty. So what Jesse? Get over it.
Wanna use that slow, finicky SCSI board? Go ahead - be my guest.

Now, how much did I spend on my UW-2 cards? $200 a pop? Do I care?
No! It's sunk. A freshman econ student will tell you that it ain't about
cost - it's about value.

Let's see, FireWire's has about 5 times the throughput of UW SCSI - at
its best. Apple develops a new technology, I say more power to them - a
measly $1 per port is NOTHING.

How much should MS pay Apple for all the free copying they've done over
the years? You tell me. Just stop that snivelling over the $1/port.
Enjoy the new technology instead. Go get a VC and develop something better
if you can - then see if you want to give it away for free.

How much are those new Xeon chips again? You must think they should be
free as well - right. I don't know what they put in the air where you live
Jesse, but you'd better go easy on whatever it is 'cause it's affecting your
judgement."

================

This was written during a burst (no pun) of anger after seeing the IMHO
nonsense about Apple (aka 'Jobs' by some) charging $1 per FW port.

FYI, there is a mistake in my comparison in the post to Jesse - bits and bytes
aren't the same, so the FW numbers should be dived by a factor 8 or 10
depending on whether the transfer is in asynchronous or synchronous mode.

Net effect being that 400 FW is on a par with the best of current SCSI - not
counting SCSI-3 which I have no experience with - does anyone actually use it?

But up to 63 devices on one bus - and hot-swapping?

That's worth a $1 to me - any day.
