Apple very likely doesn't want the cash -- instead, they will probably make
technology swaps for unlimited FireWire licenses. This is a quick way to
get the latest and greatest technology onto future Mac motherboards.

It is not in Apple's interest to be too greedy, here. Apple needs FireWire
to be adopted widely. Like the QuickTime licensing issue, this too, will be
flexible.

If you ask me, this looks like a smart move.
