IMAP stands for Internet Mail Access Protocol, which is sort of the next
generation beyond POP.

The details and links to a number of different sources of software (both
server and client) are at:

http://www.imap.org/

But, basically, IMAP is server-based client/server e-mail; server based,
in that the mail stores (messages and folders) reside on the server, C/S
in that the email reader application runs on the client, not the server
as in terminal-based e-mail.

IMNSHO it represents the best of all e-mail worlds...like POP there are
a number of client applications, like terminal based mail, I can access
my e-mail from just about anywhere, on any platform.

POP is fine for a 1 person , 1 computer setup, but we have professors
here who may have 4 or more workstations they normally use: office PC,
Lab PC, Home PC, laptop for the road, and our loaner laptop for when
theirs _meets_ the road ;-) With this setup POP would be utterly
unworkable, particularly when, for instance, a desktop system dies.

People don't lose everything then. All we have to do is swap in a box
with the applications on it , and voila' they're up and running again.

The downside, of course, is that it eats server space, but that's cheap
disks, and backup tapes; e-mail turned into the killer app of our
network about 5 minutes after we lit it up.
